PROMISES IN PRAYER

OH WHAT A FRIEND
The old familiar song "What a friend we have in Jesus", originally written by preacher Joseph M. Scriven as a poem in 1855 to comfort his mother, seems to indicate we choose Him as our friend. However, the research I have done indicates the opposite and that in fact He chooses us.
When we read about the relationship Moses had with God, it seems they were friends indeed.
How do we become friends with someone? I have a plaque in my kitchen with the words" Friends forever, never apart. Maybe in distance but never in heart". With the words is a picture of two very special friends. This relationship didn't happen overnight. We spent time together, shared our thoughts, likes, dislikes, family struggles, tears, and prayers.
Sometimes, we mistakenly use terms and phrases without knowing the magnitude, or responsibility, that comes with them. If we want to be called a "friend" are we accepting the responsibility it requires? Are we prepared to sacrifice our time to listen, pray for and encourage someone? Prayer should be at the top of our list when we are beginning a new friendship.

OVER THERE
We often think of the mission field as "somewhere over there" but Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would come upon the disciples; they would be witnesses first in Jerusalem, then Judea, then Samaria and then to the uttermost parts of the world. If we bring that down to our own day and time we too are his disciples. We too are to be filled and empowered with the Holy Spirit to go into our own Jerusalem's (Grand Junction's, Denver's Brighton's, Thorton's' Englewood's etc. Then from there to our Judea's (Denver county, Mesa County, Pueblo County and so on. Samaria? Colorado? I don't know where's your Samaria?
Don't get me wrong we still need to give to our missionaries who are faithfully serving in the utter most parts of the earth but you also are called to minister as a servant of the Most High to spread the Good News wherever and whenever you can. I'm reminded of a children's Sunday school song that says, "Brighten the corner where you are."
In Christ,
Pastor Jerry Milhorn
RMC Missions Director
